Lisa Upham, CD/BDT (DONA), AAHCC is a Certified Birth Doula and Birth Doula Trainer (DONA), Bradley Method Childbirth Educator, (AAHCC), Certified Babywearing Educator (Center for Babywearing Studies) and owner of A Baby Naturally and The Loft, a natural parenting store and space for growing families in the West suburbs of Chicago. A graduate of the University of Illinois, she has additional training in midwifery, working as an assistant for a busy home birth practice for over 10 years. As a birth professional for nearly 15 years who has attended more than 1000 births, she regularly teaches classes to expecting parents and offers workshops for doulas, nurses, and other professionals on pregnancy, birth, and labor support. She has completed additional trainings through Spinning Babies and Resolve through Sharing and offers seminars for birth professionals, providing continuing education opportunities. Lisa was brought into this work from the field of education. After teaching middle school for several years in the Clark County School District in Southern Nevada, she had her first baby and was alarmed and the lack of information and resources available to support the low-intervention, physiologic birth process. She left her work to become a childbirth educator and birth doula, first attending births in Nevada, before relocating back to her home state of Illinois in 2005. Lisa's passion continued to grow and she began training birth doulas through DONA International in 2008 and opened her retail store, A Baby Naturally, a few years later. The Loft, the space above the store, houses everything an expectant family might need with childbirth education, prenatal massage, exercises classes, lactation support and more. Several professionals, including a chiropractor, naturopathic doctor, and a midwifery practice also call The Loft their home. When she is not in the store or teaching, Lisa is a mom of three, two boys and a girl, and spends a lot of time driving them to sports and activities. She enjoys being outdoors, gardening, and just started learning to do brush calligraphy!
